A Line in the Sand: Opening a New Domestic Violence Shelter in Ventura County

April 6, 2026

Yesterday was not just a ribbon cutting.

It was a line in the sand.

We opened a new domestic violence shelter here in Ventura County, creating safe, immediate housing for survivors who are making one of the hardest decisions of their lives: to leave their abuser.

And let us be very real about what that means for these women.

Leaving Is Not Just Emotional

Leaving an abusive relationship is not just emotional. It is financial. It is logistical. It is dangerous.

For so many women, the choice is not “stay or go.” It is “stay, or risk homelessness.”

That is why spaces like this matter.

Because safety should not come with a price tag. Dignity should not require permission. And survival should not mean starting from nothing.

What Community Looks Like

I was deeply honored to stand alongside our elected leaders, advocates, and the incredible team at the Coalition for Family Harmony to celebrate this milestone, and to share my voice not just as an advocate, but as someone who understands how critical these lifelines are.

This is what community looks like. This is what investment in people looks like. This is what hope looks like.

The Work Continues

A shelter is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of one. Every bed in that building is a woman who chose herself. Every door that opens is a family getting a second chance at safety.

If you are able, consider supporting the shelter. Small contributions create real safety.

Special thanks to Congressman Salud Carbajal, District Attorney Erik Nasarenko, Jeff Gorell, Leah Lacayo, Dr. Prijatel-Sutton, and all of the donors and tireless folks working behind the scenes at the Coalition for Family Harmony who brought this to fruition.

We are just getting started.
